On a bustling Beijing street known for its tourist shops, expensive restaurants, and nightlife, where graduate students come to buy native treats until they're broke (according to my dad, who speaks from experience), a man plays the erhu and sings. He is ragged and blind, at his feet sits a can filled with loose change. To me, he represents the Old Beijing, whose architecture China preserves in Beihai, and history's wonders.
